Which Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson Symbian phones can be hacked or flashed?

Set Symbian S60 free
Update: new hacks for Nokia and SonyEricsson phones with S60v3, S60v5, and Symbian^3. No certificates needed!

Contrary to popular belief, hacking your Symbian phone is not just a sport for software pirates. Setting your copy of Symbian free allows you to install unsigned programs, customise menus and icons, clean up your active standby screen, switch off that annoying camera shutter sound, make backups of all sorts of things without having to use the piece of Windows-only bloatware called Ovi Suite (just as bad as the old PC Suite), and much more.

But Nokia doesn't like freedom. They especially hate your freedom to control your own phone. That's why they made firmware updates that kill the Symbian hacks to take control of your phone away from you.

Some Symbian phones can be fully hacked with the HelloOX and HelloCarbide methods (which means that you can switch off the capability restrictions completely for all programs), others can be partially hacked with the HelloOX method, but switching off capability restrictions requires additional hacks (such as ROMPatcher patches). Your hacking options depend on your phone model and firmware version.

this list was updated on September 19, 2010, for newer phones check out the new antivirus hacks

ROMPatcher patches and other tricks designed for Nokia phones will not necessarily work on Samsung phones. Anything beyond the ability to install unsigned programs is a bonus on a hacked Samsung.

UPDATE: You can now patch installserver.exe on new firmware too, so you can install programs on new phones with new firmware without having to sign them first.

Is your Symbian phone too new for HelloOX?

The old hacks (HelloOX, HelloCarbide etc.) don't work on the latest Symbian phones (Nokia C7, Nokia N8, etc.), and developer certificates to sign those hacks (required to install them) are almost impossible to get since Nokia played dirty.

The good news: you can hack new Symbian phones with S60v3, S60v5, and Symbian^3 with a brand new antivirus hack (preferred method) or by flashing the firmware.

I want to update the firmware of my E71 to v200.21.118. I know this firmware is not hackable anymore. At this moment I still have 100.07.76 installed which can be hacked. I did so and replaced an adjusted version of installserver.exe in c:\sys\bin, so that I'm able to sign programs using MobileSigner v1.03.

Because I heard that after upgrading to 200.21.118 you have to install all programs again and that it situation is comparable to a hard reset, this also means that most probably installserver.exe in c:\sys\bin is gone or repaired, so that I cannot sign programs anymore. I'd like to know if this is the case. Who can confirm.

I'm asking this because I still can with my 6120c after upgrading to an unhackable version (v6.01) but all prgrams were still there and installserver.exe was not overwritten and still usable in combination with MobileSigner v1.03 to sign applications. So this upgrade was not as hard as the E71 one, which offers a good protection applying a hard reset-effect.

E90 Applying patches for ever

Which patch did you try? The generic feature pack 1 patch for installserver.exe?

The installserver patch and the ROMPatcher program were made by the people at the Symbian Freak forum, so they're the obvious place to look for help if their code doesn't work on your phone.

the one from E:/patches
the open4all.rmp
it doesnt give any results in new firmware of E90, I don't know why I had it updated. I even tried some other rmp, but no results

I have 6220 Classic. I've installed and tried HelloCarbide several times. I'm supposed to copy installserver.exe into C:/sys/bin but C:/sys does not contain bin folder.

OPDA had a problem with their certificates a week or two ago, so if your OPDA DevCert doesn't work, try to get a new one.

If you can't get a working DevCert from OPDA, try one of the other options on http://symbianism.blogspot.com/2009/01/signing-sis-symbian-installer-files.html .

The DevCerts from iMobile seem to work OK right now.

@ the previous poster with the non-working OPDA cert: I deleted your comment by accident, and I can't get it back. Sorry.

I would like know the differences between partial and full hack. I searched in forums, blogs and sites. But I can't find any answer for this question. I have a N95 8Gb RM-421. Its firmware is 20.2.005. And in the list above have: “N95 8Gb (full up to 30.0.018, partial up to 31.2.007...” I didn't find any firmware 30.0.018 (full). I thing that for RM-421 just exist 31.2.007 above (none mention to 30.0.018 anywhere). I would like upgrade. But I don't know what I will lose when change it to 31.2.007 (partial). You said for full hack: “which means that you can switch off the capability restrictions completely for all programs”. My question is about what are the limitations of “HelloOX method”. Who want the full control of Nokia phones would keep firmware under 31.2.007? It is what mean in practice the difference between full and partial hack? If you can't answer me, I thank you if you say where I can find some help. Congratulation! You are doing a great blog. (And sorry for writing mistakes. English aren't my native language)

"Full hack" means that your phone's capability checking is switched off completely. This means that when yo switch off "caps" with a program like ROMPatcher every application on your phone has full read and write access to all system folders.

"Partial hack" means that you can install anything you like, but the capabilities of your programs are limited by their certificate. You can't switch off "caps," although you can browse system folders with the Open4All patch.

If you want to change system files or give all your apps full system access you'll need the full hack.

If you just want to install unsigned programs, the partial hack will do the job.

Maybe HelloCarbide is too old for your phone? Try JustHackIt from http://symbian-coderus.blogspot.com/2011/04/new-hack-for-all-symbian.html . If that doesn't work, have a look at the hacking/modding section of the symbian freak forum.
