Theme Scheduler, Profile Scheduler, and Key Lock Clock speak more languages

Theme Scheduler changes the theme of your mobile phone on schedule, schedules the background image of your active standby screen, and it can link themes to your current active profile.

Profile Scheduler automatically switches profiles on your phone, so you'll never forget to put it on ultraloud when you go out, or to activate silent mode for classes or scheduled business meetings.

Theme Scheduler and Profile Scheduler now speak eight extra languages, bringing the total to 20.

Both programs come in two flavors: signed and unsigned. The unsigned versions are free, but you'll have to run them through Symbian Signed before you can install 'em on your phone, or sign 'em with your own certificate, or hack your phone to break free from Symbian Signed.

The signed versions are bundled with adtronic, an intrusive piece of adware that pollutes your phone with advertisements when you get called or receive an SMS. That's right: adtronic puts ads on your screen even when Theme Scheduler and Profile Scheduler are not running! So better get the unsigned versions of Theme Scheduler and Profile Scheduler. Signing the program or hacking your phone takes a little extra work, but having adtronic on your phone is much worse.


Key Lock Clock is only available as an unsigned test version. On the bright side, it's not bundled with adtronic.

Key Lock Clock displays a clock on your screen when you lock the keypad, which is especially useful on 60 3rd ed. Feature Pack 2 phones without a built-in "set clock as screensaver" option. Key Lock Clock lets you set your own clock font, light intensity, background color, and light timeout period.

The latest update fixes bugs and adds languages, bringing the total language count to twenty.

Light Control

Light Control gives you much more control over the light settings of your phone than Symbian's own display settings menu.

Lost in the dark? Light Control can turn the camera flash into a flashlight on some phones. If that doesn't work on your phone, Light Control can still turn your phone into a torch by lighting up the screen to full brightness in different colors. And if you're really lost, Light Control can make your phone blink SOS in morse code.

Light Control won't show itself in the Symbian task manager if you send it to the background, so close it from the Options menu if you don't want it to keep running.

The latest update fixes a startup bug (that used to bite the Nokia N78), and you can make the light blink too.

Light Control is unsigned. You can check if Symbian's Open Signed Online will sign it for you, or sign it yourself, or hack your phone so you can install unsigned programs without having to worry about signing programs.

Theme Scheduler and Profile Scheduler come in two versions: signed and unsigned. Signing the program or hacking your phone takes a bit of extra work, but allowing adtronic to infect your phone is much, much, much worse.

Change the look and feel of your phone: GDesk standby screen editor and ThemeEdit

GDesk

Personal standby screen builder GDesk you can put as many program shortcut icons on your mobile phone display as you can fit on it. The calendar plugin can customise the look and feel of the calendar box on your home screen, and the clock plugin offers way more time and date display options than Symbian's own standby screen. With so many features you'd almost forgive GDesk for its high memory consumption and lack of bluetooth, internet, and operator indicators.

GDesk v0.33g is signed with a new certificate. Until the new certificate expires you don't need to play with the date settings of your phone to install it. The new GDesk version also has a few Symbian S60 5th ed. fixes, so it works better on touchscreen Nokias like the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

ThemeEdit

ThemeEdit lets you overhaul themes on your phone. Change the color, edit .mif and .mbm files, give your theme a new name, and remove themes that don't appear in the application manager.

ThemeEdit requires Python with extra modules, and your phone needs to be hacked and capability checking must be switched off.

FreeFSWP turns your standby screen wallpaper full screen, KeyLockClock shows the time when you lock your keypad

FreeFSWP

Symbian's own wallpaper option won't display the top and bottom part of your image on your standby screen, but FreeFSWP by junnikokuki shows the full picture everywhere. It replaces your theme background with any image of your choice. On your standby screen, in the menu, in folders, and in every application that uses your theme image as background.

Version 1.01.1 fixes a wallpaper selection bug that bit some phones.

FreeFSWP only works on Symbian S60 3rd edition phones with feature pack 1 or older. This includes popular phones like the Nokia N82 and N95. It doesn't work on feature pack 2 phones like the Nokia N79 or S60 th ed. phones like the Nokia 5800XM. The program needs to be signed before you can install it, unless you've hacked your phone to get rid of the Symbian Signed madness.

The latest version is not yet available on the english part of the official site, but you can already get it from Mobile Castle.

Make themes with Carbide, rename themes with Theme Rename

Carbide

Carbide is Nokia's program to create themes for Symbian S60. The program eats a boatload of RAM and half a gigabyte of disk space. And you need Windows, because it won't run on Mac or Linux. Unfortunately the alternatives are even worse.

The latest version of Carbide lets you customise the new music player parts of S60 3rd ed. Feature Pack 2. It's Windows Vista compatible too.

Theme Rename

Many theme authors give their themes long, clumsy names which don't tell you anything about the theme itself. Theme Rename lets you rename the themes on your phone, so you can give them descriptive names instead of the cryptic names that their authors stuck on them. You need to have Python installed on your phone to run Theme Rename.

Shorcuts to SIM contacts (for feature pack 1 and older) and themes (for feature pack 2 and newer)

SIM directory

Nokia phones with Symbian S60 3rd ed. feature pack 2 can display contacts from your phone memory and your SIM card at the same time, but on phones with feature pack 1 (or without feature pack) you have to dig deep down in the options menu to see your SIM contacts.

Or you can install the Python application SIM directory. This simple piece of code which floats all over the Symbian forums puts an icon on your phone for direct access to your SIM contacts.

Delete stuck installers and themes, remove share online from active standby, recover 5 MB of phone memory by deleting a useless placeholder file

Sometimes you'll want or need to remove things from your phone but Symbian won't let you. There are ways to make your Symbian phone know that you're the boss. Some of these methods require that you hack your copy of Symbian, others don't.


• Delete stuck installer files from memory card (no hack needed)

Your application manager may contain references to .sis files which are not installed and which can not be removed. This can happen if a program fails to install, or if you reset your phone. To get rid of these stuck installers, you'll need to remove them manually.

You'll need access to your memory card from your computer by bluetooth, USB cable, or card reader.

1) Connect your phone to your computer in data transfer mode (a.k.a. mass storage). Do NOT choose PC Suite mode.

2) Tell your computer to show hidden files and folders.

3) Navigate to \private\10202dce on your memory card and remove the .sis files that appear as "not installed" in the application manager.

Share Online is a Nokia service to upload pictures, video, and text to blogs, photo sharing sites, etc.

If you recently updated your firmware, or if you have a very new Nokia, you may have noticed that there's a "share online" entry that eats up valuable space on your active standby screen. It's very easy to remove Share Online from a phone with a hacked copy of Symbian.

You'll need a hacked phone, Python, and onlshSwitch.

1) Make sure your phone is hacked, "caps" are switched off, Python is installed on your phone memory, and the active standby screen mode is switched off.

2) Run onlshSwitch and remove "share online" from your active standby screen.

3) Switch your active standby screen back on.

This doesn't work on all Nokia phones.

If you recently updated your firmware, or if you have a very new Nokia, you may have noticed that there's a "share online" entry that eats up valuable space on your active standby screen. You can get rid of it by installing a beta test version of Share Online, and then removing it.

• Recover 5 MB of internal phone memory (for hacked phones)

Deep down in the dungeons of the Symbian system folders sits a 5 MB placeholder file called reserved.bin. This space is only used if you do an "over the air" firmware update. If you update your phone from your computer, you don't need this file and you can delete it to gain five extra megabytes of phone memory.

You'll need a hacked phone and a Symbian file manager like Active File or X-plore.

1) Make sure your phone is hacked, "caps" are switched off.

2) Use a Symbian file manager like Active File or X-plore and navigate to C:\Private\102072c4.

3) Delete the file reserved.bin.

4) Make an empty text file called reserved.bin and drop it into C:\Private\102072c4.

5) If you open "device manager" in your settings folder, the file may reappear.
